Omo Valley Travel: Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Omo Valley?
The Omo Valley is in the far south-west of Ethiopia, in the South Omo Zone near the Kenyan border. Jinka is the main base town for tours, and the Lower Omo Valley is home to more than a dozen distinct peoples, including the Hamar, Mursi, Karo, Dasanech and Nyangatom.
What is the best time to visit the Omo Valley?
The dry season from September to March is the most reliable time to travel, with the best road access. The Hamar bull-jumping ceremonies happen throughout the year but are most often held between July and September and again from December to March. The green season (April to June) is quieter, with dramatic skies but harder road conditions.
How many days do I need for an Omo Valley tour?
Most travellers spend 5 to 8 days in South Omo. A 4-day trip covers the Hamar and Karo areas around Turmi and Jinka, while 7 to 10 days lets you add Mursi, Dasanech, Konso and the Rift Valley lakes.
Is the Omo Valley safe to visit?
Organised tours with experienced local guides and drivers are the standard and recommended way to visit. Your guide handles permits, local scouts where required, road conditions and respectful introductions to communities. Check current travel advice before you book.
Can I customise my Omo Valley tour?
Yes. We build private and small-group Omo Valley itineraries around your dates, interests and budget, including photography trips, festival-focused departures and combinations with the Historic Route or the Danakil Depression.
